The American Chemical Society-Greater Houston Section has honored Michael S. Wong
, chair and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, with its 2018 Joe W. Hightower Award.
Wong said the award is meaningful because of his close relationship with Hightower, who was professor emeritus of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Rice University until his death in 2015.
"Joe was a friend and mentor to me," Wong said of Hightower, who came to Rice in 1967. "He was instrumental in recruiting and hiring me shortly before he retired from Rice. This award gives me a chance to reflect on all that he has done, and all that I would like to do in life and in research."
Like Hightower, Wong's area of research is in heterogeneous catalysis chemistry.
"He was a world-class researcher," Wong added, "and he was such a giving person to the university, the Houston community and our professional societies."
The Joe W. Hightower Award recognizes meritorious contributions to the welfare and distinction of the Greater Houston Section, including contributions to education, research or community service.
will present the award to Wong at a reception on Oct. 27.
