Our graduate programs offer research topics in several areas of chemical engineering and related fields while retaining an atmosphere where students and faculty have extensive personal contact.

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), a Master of Science (MS, with thesis), and a non-thesis Master's (MChE) degree that is suitable for students and working professionals.

Rice has eliminated the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) standardized test requirement for its 2022 graduate programs.

Professional Master's Program

The professional master's program in chemical engineering (McHE) offers a non-thesis professional degree intended to better prepare students for a career in the field of chemical engineering. The program empowers engineers with strong technical skills, along with elective coursework in business, management, communication, and leadership.

Master of Science Program

The Master of Science program is a thesis-based degree that seeks to prepare students in the field of chemical engineering. This program opens opportunities for new graduates in industries focused on energy, (petro) chemical, materials, biotechnology, and environment and safety. There is no financial assistance available for this program.
