Sunny Niu, a sixth-year doctoral student in chemical and biomolecular engineering (ChBE) at Rice University, has won first place in the 2021 Mission Connect Annual Scientific Symposium poster contest.

Niu’s poster was titled “Development of a Lateral Flow Assay for Detection of Traumatic Brain Injury Biomarkers.” The contest, held Nov. 12, was sponsored by the Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) Foundation, a Houston-based organization advancing technologies for people with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.

“Sunny has been working on a sensitive biosensor to detect proteins released after traumatic brain injury,” said Sibani Lisa Biswal, William M. McCardell Professor in Chemical Engineering. Niu is a member of her research group.

The symposium included more than 70 poster presentations from across the medical center. Niu received a $100 cash prize.
